I am 26 and have had a Roth IRA since I graduated college at age 22 (and maxed it out each year so far). My boyfriend is 2 years younger than me and does not have an IRA of any kind right now. We are thinking about getting married within the next year. I’m wondering if it makes sense for him to open his own Roth IRA, and if so, should he be doing that before we get married, after, or does it not matter? Neither of us have school loans or car loans or credit card debt. He owns his home and pays a monthly mortgage, but I only rent an apartment in a different city. Any advice for us?

    Cheri,

I think in regards to your boyfriend the sooner the better. Unless he does not qualify for a Roth IRA due to his MAGI now and would in the future, there really isn’t any reason to wait. Hope that helps!

Sounds good. I’ll prod him in that direction. Thank you for your help!
